After getting rained out twice in August, we're hoping to finally get this ride in! SkyMarsh is a new, century ride originating from the Marshall Park & Ride. This route heads out towards Hume over beautiful rolling roads and climbs over Chester Gap followed by the long fast descent into Front Royal. Mountain goats have the option of turning onto the gratuitous climb up & down Chester Gap Road, but this option is easily skipped for those who just want to save their matches for later climbs.

After a rest stop in Front Royal we'll make the long, gentle climb up Skyline Drive to Panorama. Please don't forget the $8 park entry fee for Skyline drive. From Panorama we'll enjoy another long descent as we head into Sperryville. From Sperryville we'll head up to Little Washington with a small climb over Gid Brown Hollow Rd., followed by the beautiful descent down Harris Hollow on the other side. We'll then head back towards Marshall via Flint Hill and Crest Hill Rd. The route will cover approximately 104 miles and includes some 9,300 feet of elevation.

A few things to note:
1. This is a new route and while many of the roads are old favorites from other rides, we haven't previously completed this ride start to finish.
2. There will be a short 2-5 mile stretch of riding along Hwy 211 between Sperryville and Little Washington. This stretch will include some fast moving traffic but the road has a wide shoulder and shouldn't be particularly difficult with common sense and due caution.
3. Gid Brown Hollow Rd includes two short stretches of hard-packed dirt totaling just under a mile. This road is fine for skinny tires and carbon road bikes but is easily skipped for those who prefer to do so. Opting to skip this section requires further riding on Hwy 211 and will cut 10 miles from route, making your total mileage less than a century.
4. There is an $8 entrance fee for Skyline Drive.
5. This is a self-supported ride. While there will 4 reasonably spaced rest stops - Front Royal, Elk Wallow, Sperryville and Flint Hill - riders should plan to bring plenty of water and nourishment as needed. The last rest stop in Flint Hill is around mile 85.

The ride leader will ride at a low "A" pace and will NOT, repeat NOT be leading from the back given the length and duration of this ride - unless of course I get dropped by everyone and lead from the rear by default, which is always distinct possibility! All are welcome to join as long as you are comfortable and capable of completing the ride by yourself should you lose the group.

IMPORTANT: CHECK THE POTOMAC PEDALERS WEBSITE AND GOOGLE E-MAIL GROUP FOR UPDATES AS THE RIDE START TIME MAY VARY SLIGHTLY. Ride leader also requests that interested riders register-RSVP for the ride on the Potomac Pedalers website for cue sheet count purposes.
