Fall has arrived, which means it’s time for Blue Grass Byways from Brandywine, WV. This ride covers much of the route from the Mountain Mama century, but in the reverse direction, and was designed by Al Robertson and Rick Bidstrup. The ride has 60% of the MM climbing, or about 6500’. The ride leader is especially eager to do the ride since he missed Mountain Mama this year! We start with a easy spin out to the town of Sugar Grove, passing one of the early tributaries of the Potomac River as it tumbles over bedrock. We get the hardest climb out of the way early, summiting Bullpasture Mountain en route to our first rest stop in McDowell. Our next leg has 2 climbs, Jack Mountain and Monterey Mountain, and a cruise down the beautiful Blue Grass Valley to our second rest stop in Blue Grass. From there, it’s 2 more climbs to get home: Snowy and Hoover. Shortcut options will be available. The ride leader will camp at the Brandywine Recreation Area before the ride.

Directions to ride start: Take Rte 66 West to Rte 81 South. After 53 miles, take exit 247B toward Harrisonburg and get onto Rte 33 West. Follow the signs to stay on Rte 33 through town. After 20+ miles, you’ll come to a major climb with switchbacks (Shenandoah Mountain, featured in the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo). The turnoff for the Brandywine Recreation Area is on the left at the bottom of the ensuing descent (look for a small USFS sign), and is a little hard to spot. If you pass an eatery named "Fat Boys Pork Palace,” you’ve gone a mile or so too far! Please check with the ride leader if the weather is marginal. Chris Ross [ross3ca@verizon.net] 571/455-2138.
