This is another in the series of training rides for Mountains of Misery
and other spring climbing challenges.
This is a beautiful and
challenging ride that starts from the Marshall Park & Ride then
heads out towards the familiar roads of Naked Mountain and Mount
Weather. After cresting Mt Weather we'll roll down to Bluemont for a
rest stop at the Bluemont Store.
From Bluemont we'll immediately climb
back over Snickers Gap for a nice flat stretch along the Shenandoah
River. Enjoy these few miles as they don't last long.
We'll soon start
climbing back up from the river to Rt 50 and head up Howellsville Road
towards Blue Mountain. For those that haven't climbed Blue Mountain,
it's very similar to the climb up Dickey Ridge at the base of Skyline,
although slightly steeper.
There is also a two-mile stretch of hard
packed dirt on the climb. This section is generally easily maneuverable
by carbon road bikes with 23mm tires. After cresting Blue we enjoy a
long downhill on the way back to Marshall. Two
planned rest stops with an option for a third; approx. 6500 feet of
