If you have ever considered leading a Potomac Pedalers Ride but been unsure how to do it, this is the event for you. We will have a short presentation and discussion of the basics of designing, scheduling, and leading a ride, followed by a multi-class training ride, and ending with a debrief and a picnic.

Have you thought about leading a ride, but aren’t sure what is involved? Have you led rides but want some tips on how to be a better leader? Do you know how to lead a ride and want to help others learn how? Do you need an excuse to do an easy early-spring ride through Rock Creek Park, meet other Pedalers, and enjoy a picnic after?
If so, come join us on our first ride leader training ride and picnic!
Leading a ride is rewarding and fun, and much easier than you might think. It lets you pick the route, start-point, and start-time you want, and lets you meet other riders who like doing the kind of ride you like to do. What better way to contribute to the cycling community than by making it easier for others to ride, all while doing the ride you want to do anyway!
We will start with a short talk to go over the basics of leading a ride, from ride planning (choosing a route, designing a cue sheet, getting on the calendar), pre-ride responsibilities (signing-in, pre-ride talk), what to do during a ride (pace, emergencies, rules of the road), and post-ride items (making sure everyone is accounted for, ride report, returning sign-in sheet). The talk will be led by a number of experienced ride leaders in all ride classes, and there will be plenty of opportunity for open discussion and questions. We will also go over Club resources on ride planning and give you a list of contacts to call for help planning and leading a ride.
Then we’ll break up into small groups by ride class and go on a shortish ride through and around Rock Creek Park to put those lessons into practice. The following leaders among leaders will be leading group rides in these classes:
Geng Chan: BB group
Jim Quinn: B group
Denise Cohen: CC group
Johanna Nathanson: C group
After the group rides, we will finish up with a short debriefing and a picnic. We’ll ensure all leave with the confidence and support needed to thrive in leading rides for the club. The expected schedule for the day is:
10:00 - 11:00 – Ride Leader Basic Training
11:00 -1:00 (or so) – Ride Leader Ride on Beach Dr. (Appx 20-25 miles)
1:15 - 1:30 – Short Recap of Ride Leader Basics
1:30 - 3:30 – Picnic. Stay as long as you like for some food and socializing.
The Club has rented the pavilion at Veirs Mill for the day, so the event will be held, rain or shine. To RSVP or to learn more, please contact Eric Pilsk or Rudi Riet
Remember: ride leaders are the glue that keeps our club strong and vibrant, and we hope you will join us to strengthen our club and the DC Cycling community.
