Here's a quite beautiful roller through Amissville, Laurel Mills, Washington, and Flint Hill, with some wonderful mountain views. The shorter route (57 miles) is all on asphalt. The longer route (74 miles) has three sections of unpaved road. Two unpaved sections are in the gorgeous Gid Brown Hollow –a scenic highlight of the ride, through pure unspoiled Appalachia– the other dirt part is by the flat flood plain of the Thornton River; the dirt sections are in good shape and navigable.

Two unpaved sections are in the gorgeous Gid Brown Hollow –a scenic highlight of the ride, through pure unspoiled Appalachia– the other dirt part is by the flat flood plain of the Thornton River; the dirt sections are in good shape and navigable with thin tires.

There are two very short, somewhat steep, climbs on dirt. You can easily walk up those if you are uncertain about your ability to stay upright.  In any case, we all will be walking our bikes through the closed, historic Old Waterloo bridge (unless an alternative route is needed).

There are two rest stops.

You may download the GPS for an earlier version of the route here,
http://ridewithgps.com/routes/3177912.  Note that I've changed the end to avoid busy Crest Hill Rd. on the approach to Marshall.  (Turn left on Hume (@66.6 or 49.5 miles) and right on Ramey (@70.4/53.3))

Ride leader plans to ride at a brisk B pace.
