One of my favorite Northern Virginia roads is Snickersville Turnpike, the 15-mile country byway connecting the metroplexes of Aldie and Bluemont. As the name suggests, we’ll ride all of Snickersville.
The route is available at http://RideWithGPS.com/routes/5435416.
From the park, we’ll go through The Plains and use Hopewell/Waterfall Road to cross the ridge to the east. Then we’ll wander north to Aldie for rest stop 1 at about 21.5 miles. Then it’s onto Snickersville Turnpike all the way to Bluemont and (optional) climb up to Hwy 7.
We’ll do a U-turn and head back on Snickersville to Bluemont Store for a rest stop at about mile 36. Then it’s back to Marshall via Rokeby and Rectortown Roads. Total climbing is about 3,700 feet according to RideWithGPS.
When we did this ride last year, a few hardy souls added the climbs up Mount Weather and Naked Ground to their return, to make the ride about 70 miles. I won't have cues for that option, but most folks already know the way.
The ride starts about a mile east of Marshall at Northern Fauquier Community Park on Hwy 55. The official address is 4155 Monroe Parkway, Marshall, VA 20116. The URL for the park is www.fauquiercounty.gov/government/departments/parksrec/index.cfm?action=nsfc.
There is plenty of parking and flush toilets --a major advantage to the park-&-ride lots of Marshall & The Plains. Our gathering spot is the second parking lot on the left after entering the park from Hwy. 55; its entrance is on Ross Road, a left turn from the main entrance road, Monroe Prkwy. The ride leader will likely be moseying along at a B pace in preparation for the following week's Storming of Thunder Ridge.
No go in rain. Got questions, call or send e-mail, but call before the morning of the ride.
