On May 18, 2016 at 7:00 PM, the Ride of Silence will take place across the country and internationally - Olney will once again be taking part, as one of just two locations holding rides in the DC Metro area.

Police-Escorted Roll out at 7:00 PM Sharp

Cyclists will take to the roads in a silent procession to honor those cyclists who have been killed or injured while cycling on public roadways. Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves.

WHO: Any cyclist wishing to show respect and solidarity; an ability to ride 10 mph is requested

WHEN: Wednesday, May 18 (always the third Wednesday in May)

TIME: Gather at 6:30 PM - numbers and arm bands available; Comments at 6:45 PM; Police-Escorted Roll out at 7:00 PM Sharp

WHERE: We will gather in the Olney Harris Teeter Parking lot, closest to the road connecting the two shopping centers.

ROUTE: The ride will be a 10-mile loop that begins and ends at the Harris Teeter parking lot; we will finish before dark but please be mindful if you biked to the ride start that you may end up riding home in the dark and be prepared. The route is meant to be very accessible in terms of difficulty - there is one incline going up on Hines Road from Cashell to Georgia Ave. but that's the most challenging part.

OTHER IMPORTANT NOTES: We will ride together as one group, like a funeral procession and will have police escort. This is a somber ride and ask there to be no talking. Because the police will be escorting us through intersections and we need to stick together, we also ask that you make sure your bike is in good working condition - tires pumped, gears and brakes working. We will have a pump to use at the start.

The Ride of Silence is a free ride that asks its cyclists to ride no faster than 12 mph, wear helmets, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no national sponsors and no registration fees. The ride, which is held during National Bike Month, aims to to show respect for and honor the lives of those who have been killed or injure and raise the awareness that cyclists have a legal right to the public roadway.
