Bicycle Maintenance Workshops and Rides - June 6 & 13

Our Club will be presenting two bicycle maintenance Workshops for PPTC members on the first two Saturday mornings in June, hosted by Freshbikes (Ballston) in Arlington, VA. Join us for a great time and a chance to learn how to get your bike ready for summer! Because of constraints on capacity, each of these free events is limited to 40 attendees and open only to Club members. Pre-registration is required for either workshop; non-members are welcome to join PPTC (only $30!) and then register. Presenters include Leslie Tierstein, Rudi Riet, Peter Klosky, Tom Roberson, and Bob Manka. The two separate workshops are:

Workshop-1: Basic Bicycle Care at Home and On the Road,

Come join the fun and learn the basic steps to take care of your bicycle and get ready for the summer. Experienced PPTC members will present the basics for taking care of your bicycle including cleaning and lubing the gears and chain, inflating tires, changing a flat with inflation options, adjusting brakes and shifting on the road, and noticing problems before they develop. We’ll present short information items on workstands; options for pedals, shoes and cleats, as well as bike fitting and basic tools.

Workshop-2: Intermediate/Advanced Bicycle Care

Saturday Morning June 13, 9:45 to 11:30 AM, Freshbikes Ballston

Come join us to learn and discuss the intermediate/advanced steps to take care of your bicycle. We will describe how to care for your bicycle including how to remove, clean and change cassette cogs. Also, how to inspect, clean, measure and change a chain and inspect, adjust, and change brake pads. And how to adjust and tune index shifting at front and rear derailleurs. If time allows, how to inspect, remove and install chain rings and bar tape and lever hoods. We’ll present short information items on options for pedals, shoes and cleats; bike fitting; packing a bike to ship, and necessary tools.

At each workshop there will be snacks and drinks available and a chance to talk to each other and the presenters about bicycle care.

Post-Workshop Rides

Following the presentations at either workshop there will be optional post-workshop D/C, CC, or B rides see the ride schedule for listings; bring your bicycle to discuss and enjoy a nice rides afterwards. While the workshops are open only to registered PPTC members, the post-workshop rides are open without pre-registration and will begin about 11:45 AM on either Saturday.

Location for the Workshops

These special PPTC events will be hosted by Freshbikes (Ballston) at 3924 Wilson Blvd, Arlington, VA 22203 (Tel: 703-248-9600) one block East of the Ballston Mall at the intersection of Wilson Blvd. and N. Quincy Street. The location is almost central to the whole DC metropolitan region and accessible by Metro (Ballston, 4 blocks away), bus, or bike (Custis Trail exit at Quincy). Also accessible by car (via I-66, Chain Bridge, Roosevelt Bridge, or Key Bridge). Parking is available at Freshbikes with additional parking if needed at the Ballston Mall parking garage (1 ½ blocks West and South near Wilson and Randolph) or the Arlington Central Library (0.3 miles North near Quincy and Fairfax).
