2018 Armed Forces Cycling Classic
Saturday & Sunday, June 9 & 10

by David Whitaker

Potomac Pedalers Touring Club is partnering with the Armed Forces Cycling Classic for 2018. This year marks the 21st year for the Armed Forces Cycling Classic, the premier Washington area professional bicycle race event.

If you want to see the best in North American bicycle racing or experience riding a closed bicycle race course at your own pace, this is the event for you!  There is easy Metrorail access to both the Saturday and Sunday race events which will be held Saturday and Sunday, June 9 & 10, 2018 in Arlington, VA.

The Armed Force Cycling Classic features professional and amateur Men’s and Women’s bicycle races on courses in Clarendon and Crystal City, VA. This event also includes Kid’s Races on both Saturday and Sunday, as well as Challenge events for retired and reserved members of the military and the Challenge Ride for non-competitive cycling enthusiasts.

Sunday’s Challenge Ride event allows cyclists the opportunity to ride a professional race course at their own pace and experience the thrill of pedaling a closed barrier cycling race course with corners, climbs, descents and with race announcers over public address systems. Not to be missed is the thrill of hearing your jersey and bicycle announced for all to hear as you crest the hill beneath the three spired Air Force Memorial. Add to that, the medal one receives for completion of a requisite number of laps and one will experience a smile for days to come.

Saturday’s races in Clarendon are classic “Criterium” style race events. Criteriums are closed-circuit, short course bicycle races, which are often held in the Netherlands and Belgium. Classic criteriums make many circuits of a short urban street course and they are great spectator events. The Clarendon Cup criterium is both fast paced and very technical and can be easily watched from sidewalks and cafes along the course. Saturday’s races begin at 8:00am with amateur races events. The 50K Women’s Elite Pro Race begins at 10:05 am and the Kid’s Race begin at 11:35am. The 100K Men’s Pro/1 Race begins promptly at 12:00 noon. The Clarendon Metro Station provides easy access to the Clarendon Cup race course.

Sunday’s Challenge Ride starts promptly at 7:00am. One must pre-register for the Challenge Ride and pick up your ride packet. Challenge Ride Registration Information.

Sunday also features the Armed Forces Cycling Challenge event where retired and reserve armed forces members compete by completing laps of the race course. The branch of the service which completes the most TOTAL Laps are honored on stage during Sunday’s Men’s Pro Race and has bragging rights for the year.  To Register for the Armed Forces Challenge.

Sunday’s race events are held on a several mile long closed circuit course. Sunday features a Women’s Pro 1/2 Race, a Men’s Cat. 3 / 4 race and a Kid’s Race. Check out the Schedule of all Saturday and Sunday Armed Forces Cycling  Classic race events. Crystal City Metro is nearby to Sunday’s race course.

All participants must preregister for Sunday’s Cycling Challenge and Armed Forces Challenge events. Pre-race packet pick up is also strongly encouraged.

Volunteers are also needed for both days of the Armed Forces Cycling Classic. Consider volunteering if you want an upfront seat to see the professionals in action.

See you at the races!
