Saturday Rides on the Back Roads Century Weekend

by David Whitaker, 2018 ExCom Recording Secretary

Saturday, beginning at 1:00 pm, there will be two Antietam Area Club Rides with staggered start times to accommodate various rider levels. Saturday's rides are designed to showcase the unique features of the greater Sharpsburg area including historical sites associated with the battle of Antietam and 19th Century Washington County. There will be two separate ride starts and Antietam Creek Vineyards will once again serve as both a Ride Start and a Rest Stop for these rides.
The 10 Mile Antietam Area Family Ride is designed for families and casual cyclists. It will start at Antietam Creek Vineyards and will traverse the Sharpsburg area with a stop at Nutters Ice Cream Shop and an option to explore the historic Burnside Bridge across Antietam Creek.
The 32+ Mile Antietam Area Explorer Ride will start from a parking lot on MD 34 near to Shepherdstown and will ride through areas in the greater Sharpsburg region that were on the fringes of the battle of Antietam. It will explore the nearby ridges and the historic C&O Canal village at Taylors Landing. It will return along a seldom ridden farm route to the battlefield with a stop at Antietam Creek Vineyards before returning to the ride start near the Rumsey (MD34) Bridge over the Potomac River.
Please Note: The Saturday Antietam Area Club Rides are intended for the enjoyment of Potomac Pedalers club members and are casual in design with a focus on selected historic features in the region. We hope get you ready and to "save your legs" for Sunday's Back Roads Century. Come spend a pleasant afternoon with entertainment at a distinguished Maryland winery located on a portion of the historic Antietam battlefield. As a service to PPTC members, Antietam Creek Vineyards has once again agreed to transport wine purchased by club members to Shepherdstown Saturday evening.

Register now for the Back Roads Century -- it’s our club’s major source of revenue for supporting our operations and an opportunity to join all of us on a great weekend cycling adventure!
