Back Roads Century in Shepherdstown Offers Biking and Much More!

by Sallie Williams, VP-Century

If you can do only one ride with Potomac Pedalers this year, make it the Back Roads Century, September 15–16. PPTC’s premier annual event draws both members and people new to the club, many of whom travel hundreds of miles to participate. The BRC offers a century, a metric, a half, and four shorter rides through the sometimes challenging and always lovely terrain of West Virginia and Virginia. Rest stops will offer delicious local produce, bountiful fruit, plenty of carbs and nutritious energy drinks to refresh and refuel. More than two thousand riders and volunteers will participate, many of them bringing family and friends for a full weekend of fun. The post-ride party on the beautiful grounds of Shepherd University’s Popodicon mansion, will feature live music and fresh taco’s with all the fixings!

Why does Shepherdstown draw visitors from around the globe? Southern Living magazine calls this oldest town in West Virginia one of the Top Ten Small Towns of the South.

Shepherdstown has three great National Historic Parks in it’s back yard — Antietam, Harpers Ferry, and the C&O Canal National Historic Park. The Potomac river offers a paradise for flatwater or whitewater recreation, cycling, hiking, fishing, running, and climbing. Boats are available for rental from multiple outfitters in the area.  Home to Shepherd University, Shepherdstown has the intellectual muscle and scenic beauty that draws students, young families and retirees alike to enjoy it’s many festivals and entertainment options.

Restaurants in town offer wide ranging fare for the most discerning palate. In fact, Shepherdstown was selected to compete for Foodiest Town in WV against cities fifty times its size. When in town for the BRC, plan to check out the options along German Street where you can order a traditional regional breakfast, save room for a French, English, Thai, Middle Eastern, Japanese, or Mexican lunch, then splurge on one of the award-winning restaurants for dinner.

Shepherdstown offers lodging for all budgets and tastes from charming B&Bs to comfortable hotels like our lodging partners at the Clarion Hotel and Conference Center and the Quality Inn, located just outside of town.  If you want to splurge, consider a stay at the elegant Bavarian Inn, a romantic country inn perched on a bluff overlooking the Potomac River. Other lodging options include the charming Thomas Shepherd Inn, The Mecklenburg Inn, or other options listed on the BRC website.

Finally, be sure to sample the many options for live music in Shepherdstown. Musical choices range from bluegrass, to folk, to alt rock, punk, and yes, classical.

All things Shepherdstown are found on the Visitors Center website, Check their Facebook page, too, for up-to-the minute news on sales and restaurant specials as well as performance information. A wonderful ride through beautiful and varied terrain and a great little town. Who could want more than the Back Roads Century? We’ll see you in September!

Registration prices are reasonable and very competitive for both members at $60 ($75 if you wait until August) and non-members $75 (rising to $90 for those waiting until August).  Register now for this event -- it’s our club’s major source of revenue for supporting our operations and an opportunity to join all of us on a great weekend cycling adventure!
