Why Should You Attend the 2018 Back Roads Century?

by Sallie Williams, VP-Century

Shepherdstown hosts the Back Roads Century again September 16,2018! It’s a charming little college town with a vibrant artisan culture. It’s scenic, overlooking the Potomac at the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. It’s steeped in Civil War history with Antietam and Harper’s Ferry a stone’s throw away. And it’s a bicycling mecca. It’s a perfect setting for the Back Roads Century on September 16, 2018.

We’re offering a fun-filled and active weekend, in addition to a great single-day century tour. Saturday morning will feature free group bike rides (catering to cyclists of different abilities) that traverse along local Civil War battle sites.  Be sure to sample special tours, activities and artists that highlight the diversity and rich cultural history of the region. On Saturday evening, you and your non-cycling companions may choose to join us for a BBQ dinner at the Town Run Tap House (advance sign-up required) or you can sample offerings from local chefs at one of the outstanding local restaurants.

Sunday is, of course, the main event. This year, we will be offering six routes for cyclists of all levels, ranging from 23 to 101 miles. As in past years, we again will have our famous hummus and tomato sandwiches, boiled potatoes, and fruit from local growers at the rest stops. We also will be welcoming a new partnership with Shepherd University Student Affairs. Student groups will enthusiastically serve and cheer on our riders at each rest stop.  When you finish the ride, enjoy a post-ride party at the historic Popodicon Mansion on the Shepherd University grounds. The party will feature a catered meal, live music, masseuses, and much more.

To accommodate the approximately 2,000 plus bicyclists, we have already secured lodging blocks at area hotels. All the details are on our website so book early for this year’s Back Roads Century.

Registration prices are reasonable and very competitive for both members at $60 ($75 if you wait until August) and non-members $75 (rising to $90 for those waiting until August).  Register now for this event -- it’s our club’s major source of revenue for supporting our operations and an opportunity to join all of us on a great weekend cycling adventure!
