Part-1: Basic Bicycle Care at Home and On the Road

Saturday June 17, 10:00 AM - Noon, Spokes Etc., Vienna, VA

Come join the fun and learn the basic steps to take care of your bicycle and get ready for the summer.  Experienced PPTC members will present the basics for taking care of your bicycle including cleaning and lubing the gears and chain, inflating tires, changing a flat with inflation options, adjusting brakes and shifting on the road, and noticing problems before they develop.  We’ll present short information items on workstands; options for pedals, shoes and cleats, as well as bike fitting and basic tools.  If possible, bring the front wheel off your bike for tire changing.

Part-2: Intermediate/Advanced Bicycle Care

Saturday June 17, 12:30 - 2:00 PM, Spokes Etc., Vienna, VA

Participate in the discussion on the intermediate/advanced steps to take care of your bicycle.  Items include how to remove, clean and change cassette cogs.  Also, how to inspect, clean, measure and change a chain and inspect, adjust, and change brake pads.  Also, we show how to adjust and tune index shifting at front and rear derailleurs.  If time allows, how to inspect, remove and install chain rings and lever hoods.  We’ll continue short topics on choices of pedals, shoes and cleats, bike fitting, packing a bike to ship, and necessary tools.  We recommend Leonard Zinn’s book “Zinn & the Art of Road Bike Maintenance”; bring your copy along if you have it.

At each workshop there will be snacks and drinks available and a chance to talk to each other and the presenters about bicycle care.
