Back Roads Century Event Details


Weather Statement
This event is scheduled to take place rain or shine. In the event of a high impact weather event which would flood roads or force road closures we would cancel the event for the safety of our riders. Any announcement cancelling the event would be made by 4 AM Sunday via this page and our Facebook and Twitter accounts. (Otherwise, there will be no further weather announcements.)

Ride Date
The ride will be held, rain or shine, on Sunday, September 17, 2017.

Ride Start
The ride starts at Shepherd University, 540 West Campus Drive, Shepherdstown, WV 25443; about 60-90 minutes north-west of Washington, DC.

Ride Distances 
There are five courses for riders of all abilities - 23, 27, 47, 52, 64, and 101

Everyone is Welcome to Ride 
This event is open to the public and all cycling enthusiasts are invited to attend. There will be no onsite registration!  Registration has been extended to September 14, or as soon as we reach capacity.

Registration Fee Includes:

  • Cue Sheet showcasing historic regions
  • On-Road Route Directions
  • Mechanical Support along the routes
  • Rest Stop Food and Drinks
  • End of Ride Celebration at Popodicon Mansion with catered meal and entertainment after your ride
  • Free Showers at Shepherd University Wellness Center
  • Free Parking at Shepherd University
  • Rider numbers mailed to your home
  • Saturday pre-rides, events, and entertainment

After You Register Online
You will receive two e-mail confirmations - your order confirmation and your registration receipt.

Rider Number Mailed in September
If you registered BY AUGUST 31, we will mail you your rider number and wrist band to your home in early September. If you registered AFTER August 31, you will need to come to the Registration Tent at in Parking Lot H to sign in and get your bib number and wristband.  If you lost your number, or did not receive it in the mail, please come to the Registration Tent at in Parking Lot H to sign in and get your bib number and wristband. 

No Refund Policy
No refunds will be issued; the event is rain or shine.

Transfer Policy
Transfers are permitted.  Give your Rider Number, and wristband to the transferee.
Transferee riders will need to check in the Registration Tent in Parking Lot H to sign the waiver and Rider Behavior Policy and provide emergency contact information.

Event Capacity
Registration will close when we reach 2000 riders.

Ride Starting Times
There is a rolling start (show and go) from 7:00am to 9:30am.  There is no need to check in.  Just pin on your number, put on your wrist band, and head out.  Please adhere to the following recommended starting times so that riders of the same ability are grouped together.  This will help to avoid congestion on the road and at rest stops.  This may be subject to change depending on the number of rides we offer.

  • 7:00 am - 7:30 am - 101 Mile English Century Riders
  • 7:30 am - 8:00 am - 64 Mile Metric Century Riders
  • 8:00 am - 8:30 am - 47 and 52 Mile (Half Century) Riders
  • 8:30 am - 9:00 am - 23 Mile Riders

Route Riding Times
Routes are open from 7:00 am to 5:00 pm. Be sure to return before 5:00 pm, when the route services will close; and start early if you plan on doing the 101 mile ride!

Rider Check-In
If you registered online by August 31st, you do not have to stop at the registration area before you ride. Simply apply your rider number to your bike, apply your wristband; then get rolling. We want you to enjoy your day without standing in line.  If yu registered AFTER August 31, or if you lost or did not receive your number in the mail, check in at the Registration Tent for your bib and wrist band.  YOU MUST HAVE A WRIST BAND FOR ACCESS TO REST STOPS AND TO GET FOOD AT THE AFTER-RIDE PARTY!

Rest Stops
All rides will have designated rest stops along each route. There will be water, sports drinks, fruit, snacks and other food. Rest stops are noted on your cue sheet and the distance between them differs, depending upon which course you choose - 23, 27, 45, 51, 63, or 101 miles. Generally, they’re anywhere from 15 to 25 miles apart. You should review your cue sheet for the exact mileage

End of Ride Celebration
After the ride join us for our “End of Ride Celebration”, featuring delicious prepared by local restaurants and entertainment that will have you up on your feet even after riding for hours. This year’s celebration will take place at Popodicon Mansion, a historic venue on Shepherd University, convenient to parking and showers – you won’t want to miss it. This is included in your registration fee.  Although riders, families, and guests are welcome to join us for music and celebration, ONLY RIDERS WITH WRIST BANDS WILL BE ABLE TO GET FOOD AT THE CELEBRATION.  PLEASE KEEP YOUR WRIST BAND ON FOR THE PARTY.


Shepherd University has graciously allowed us to use the showers and towels at the University Wellness Center.  The Wellness Center is just a short walk from Lot H adjacent to Lot G.  PLEASE DO NOT WEAR BIKE SHOES/CLEATS INTO THE WELLNESS CENTER!  STREET SHOES ONLY.  Also, please consider leaving a tip for the Wellness Center staff for providing this awesome service.

Back Roads Century Jersey
We will have a beautiful new design for the 2017 Back Roads Century jersey that is available for purchase through September 25. Jersey's are available in men's short sleeve and women's short sleeve (full-zip for each), and in women's tank top. You can order your jersey during registration or purchase from our online store.

Jerseys will will be custom made after September 25 and will be mailed out in late October or early November. We are not offering jersey pickup at the event.

Information and Registration Desk 
We'll have an information and registration desk near the ride start and it will be staffed from 7:00 am – 10:00 pm. After that the Information desk moves to Popidicon Mansion on Shepherd University, site of the after-party, and will be staffed 10:30 AM - 6:00 PM.

What You Need to Bring
You must pin your rider number to your jersey for identification by our Support and Gear (SAG). You must wear your wristband for identification at our rest stops; and at the End of Ride Celebration. Helmets are required.

Travel and Lodging 
Shepherdstown, WV is approximately 60-90 minutes north west of Washington, DC. Many riders will stay overnight in the area, making a weekend of exploring the quaint town of Shepherdstown and the warm and welcoming atmosphere of the surrounding area. We will have reserved hundreds of rooms at area hotels for those early-bird arrivals and will be offering free bike rides and a variety of entertainment options the day before the Back Roads Century Ride itself. Information is coming. (If not staying overnight, riders will simply get up a little early and drive to the ride start the morning of the Back Roads Century.)

Bicycle Repair
Mechanics will be on hand to perform repairs and adjustments at the ride start, and at rest stops along the routes. 

Support and Gear (SAG)
We will have support vehicles traveling along all routes throughout the day. Their official name is “Support and Gear”, more commonly known as “SAG”. 

Safety Rules and Guidelines 
Helmets are required in order to participate in the Back Roads Century. You will be traveling on public roads in West Virginia, and you must obey all traffic laws pertaining to the state.

Rider Behavior Policy
You must agree to abide to our Rider Behavior Policy in order to participate in the Back Roads Century.
