We'll try to stay together and take breaks as needed. Under normal circumstances, there would be water and restrooms. But I can’t get a reliable answer about what will be open during the shutdown. Restrooms may be closed. No one answers at Elk Wallow so I don’t know if snacks will be available for purchase at Mile 26 – my intended turnaround point.
I would only suggest this ride to people who have at least 200 miles in the saddle in the last month.
I will park as close to the Northern Gate as possible. An alternative is to skip the initial 1,500 foot climb to Dickey Ridge and park at Dickey Ridge. Again, I will start at the bottom. I've heard that the pay stations are closed during the shutdown. Under normal (nonshutdown) conditions, there is a $5-$10 fee to enter the park on a bike. It'll cost you $30 to enter in a car (if you plan to drive to Dickey Ridge or points south.) Let me know if you plan to start at Dickey Ridge, so we can coordinate.
