Frederick Pedalers Honoring Paul Lentz with a Memorial Bench at Utica Park

Wednesday, August 1, 2018

Paul Lentz  died June 6, 2018, while on a Wednesday evening Frederick Pedalers club ride, when his bike skidded and he fell 80 feet off the LeGore Bridge. The Frederick Pedalers Executive Board is working with Frederick County Parks and Recreation to place a bench in Paul Lentz’s honor adjacent to the Utica Park parking lot where they stage their Wednesday evening rides. The Frederick Pedalers felt that this would be an appropriate means to maintain Paul’s presence with their club and to honor his decades of participation with them, including his service as their club president.

Paul was very involved in cycling and cycling clubs since at least the early 1980s. He served as Chairperson of the Potomac Pedalers Touring Club, and also served as President of the Frederick Pedalers for several years in the late 1990s. He led numerous rides over the years, notably his very cold early-morning winter rides from Mount Airy over a decade ago and his recent afternoon rides. Paul was instrumental in creating a winter event that lasted a couple of years dubbed the “Haberdashery”, where different club members hosted evenings with beer and the occasional cycling movie.  Paul was a regular participant in many Frederick Pedalers organized rides and was a frequent ride leader for 'many retired' cyclists in the fall and winter.

Having been a teacher in much of his life, Paul excelled at teaching riders how to repair their own flat tires on the road - he would not perform the task himself, instead he would instruct that person so that he/she would be self-sufficient in the future.  Paul was a tinkerer and fixer - his main bicycle was a thirty-plus year old steel machine, which he kept in flawless condition.

The total cost of the bench, attached plaque, concrete footings and the like should approximate $1000. The Parks and Recreation staff will bear all installation costs. Individual members and friends may personally contribute to this memorial via  Go Fund Me page.
