Member-At-Large On The Road Exploring with Friends:  DC @ Night

Since 2008, we have combined travel, cycling, and support of good causes with spending time with our friends! It is always a surprise to discover the interest other cyclists have in our travels and in how to do this!  Thus begins a new series of articles called “Exploring with Friends.”

Over the past several years, we seem drawn to explore our nation’s Capitol—whether it be on foot or by bike!  While we have done many DC daytime rides, we have never explored the city by night!  While talking with Jeff Miller, the DC Cycling Concierge, we found that he offered a guided ride of DC by night!  (Jeff was one of our PPTC 2018 Annual Meeting sponsors last December.)

On a beautiful, clear, Friday night in September, we met Jeff at the Smithsonian Castle to begin our evening tour.  Our tour started at 7 pm, so there was ample free parking on the mall in front of the Smithsonian Castle.  Pre-ride, we met at 5:30 pm in the Enid Haupt Gardens behind the Castle for a picnic dinner.  The setting was amazing and we enjoyed the use of the courtyard tables and chairs!

Finally at 7:30 pm we were ready to go!  After introductions, Jeff tells you about his experience/background in the cycling world.  His preparation is evident—including being stocked with extra water, snacks, and lights!  Throughout the evening, while regaling us with interesting stories, Jeff kept our group of 14 riders together and safe!

From 7:30 pm to 12:30 am we toured DC at night!  It was amazing that there was so little vehicle traffic.  We rode a great circle route from the Washington Monument to the White House/Capitol Hill, cycling past Nats Stadium and the waterfront, and on to the Jefferson, Lincoln, and WWII Memorials.   There were many other stops, lots of history and stories—-we learned a lot about our past and the city today.  Jeff will tailor the tour to emphasize what your group wants to see.

During the ride, Jeff regaled us with stories of his clients—a famous actor who added a spontaneous Capitol tour to their ride and stories of  families visiting DC.  Jeff offers rides and tours all over the DC area.

Planning the ride with Jeff started with an email to work out the basics—type of ride, size of group, date options and cost.  Then I recruited ten friends to join us on the ride!  We finalized the date and meeting location, and we were ready to tour!

Thanks to Jeff Miller (DC Cycling Concierge and PPTC Member)  for a fun and memorable evening!
