Notes From The Chairman - June 2017

Thursday, June 1, 2017

Let me begin this month with the website. From my ivory tower, the update to the new website went well. That translates to problems were fixed quickly and there were no calls for my head. To those who did experience problems, thank you for your patience as we worked to solve the problems. I understand that there is some functionality that is missing from the new website. The two areas of which I am aware are the ability to search for members and the cue sheet library. We have heard your complaints and these items will be added. However, it will take a bit of time as we develop the requirements, contract for the upgrades, and then fund these improvements.

The Club’s Ride with GPS will officially be launched either by the time you read this or soon after. The Ride Coordinators have received an advanced copy and are checking the help pages. This is a benefit of membership that I hope ride leaders and the general membership will used to their advantage. It provides a quick means of creating rides and storing those rides so that you, and others, can find them in the future. Eric Pilsk has loaded a number of popular rides into the Ride with GPS so please check it out. You can access the Ride with GPS information on the website under the "Our Rides" tab.

Registration for the Back Roads Century has opened successfully; be sure to register before the early-bird discount ends June 19. The jersey and tee shirt designs should be published soon. These designs are an improvement over previous designs and I hope that those riding will take advantage of the opportunity to order a practical souvenir of the weekend. Yes, unlike other centuries in the area, our century comes with a number of events on Saturday and Sunday to help you enjoy the entire weekend. If you have not ridden this ride in the past, please give it a try. There are distances for everyone and events the whole family will enjoy.

Nancy Avitabile, Rich Tepel, and her team continue to offer outstanding special events in the form of weekend and special rides. Be sure to come to the annual Black Hill Picnic Ride on June 10 - this year marks the 22nd year for this event. There is a Woman’s Bike Ride and Wine Tasting at Rockland Farm in Poolesville, MD on June 24 - funds from this event will help support WABA's Woman and Bicycles Program. The Shenandoah Weekend in Mt Jackson, VA is back July 7-9 for those longing to leave the sweltering city for cool mountain breezes. Registration is also open for the Carlisle Weekend in PA, August 11-13. This ride replaces the Allenberry Weekend and offers new routes for those tired of their usual rides.

There are a number of rides listed in the Out of Bounds section. Some of these rides offer discounts to Potomac Pedalers members. This is another benefit of membership in the Club.

Keep the rubber side down.
