Ride Schedule

America/New_York Hills in Arlington *** WARNING: This is NOT THE OLD D-level ride from Shirlington Library which rode down the hill on the Custis Trail and had 3 rest stops in 16 miles. This ride CLIMBS the Custis trail from the Key Bridge to the W&OD trail connection. The pace is CC (14-16 mph on the flats). There is 1 brief rest stop at 13 miles to allow everyone to come together after the long hill climb. PLEASE EMAIL THE RIDE LEADER at adepristo@me.com WHEN YOU SIGN UP. Both MEMBERS AND NON-MEMBERS are welcome to join us for this ride, followed by lunch or snack if desired. There is free parking in local garages. WEBSITE SIGN UP is encouraged but you can also just show up and register at the ride start. We meet at 9:55 am for a 10:05 am departure on the brick plaza in front of the Shirlington Library / Signature Theater on Campbell Avenue in Shirlington (in Arlington). For last minute bathroom use, the library opens at 10 am and Harris Teeter is next door and open 24 hours. There are two possible rides, depending upon the wind and the interests of the riders. RIDE #1  25 miles: If the wind speed is >10 mph, we will ride the “counter clockwise Custis Trail Loop.” Start East on Four Mile Run Trail to the Mount Vernon Trail.  Follow Mt Vernon towards DC (not towards Alexandria/Mt. Vernon). Continue to the Custis Trail which you ride till the intersection with the W&OD Trail. Make a RIGHT on the W&OD trail, follow out for 4.5 miles to the top of a short steep hill, turn around and follow W&OD all the way to the start. You will NOT need a cue sheet but you will need to climb 3-4 miles of hills on the Custis Trail. RIDE #2 20 miles: If the wind speed is <10 mph, we might ride over the Wilson Bridge to the corner of MGM National Ave and Oxon Hill Rd and return. Start East on Four Mile Run Trail to the intersection with the Mount Vernon Trail. Follow Mt Vernon towards Alexandria/Mt. Vernon. Continue through the Alexandria waterfront to the area underneath the Wilson Bridge. This area has a nice view of the Potomac and has a water fountain and clean toilets. Continue over the bridge, go past the MGM and climb the path all the way to the intersection with Oxon Hill Rd. There are 3 reasonable good climbs:  Wilson bridge (both ways) and MGM National Ave to Oxon Hill Rd.   To participate, you must wear a helmet and not use earphones during the ride. It would be wise to bring water, picture identification, a bike lock, money for lunch, and a bicycle in good repair with properly inflated tires. Remember, please email the ride leader at adepristo@me.com when you sign up. The ride leader will cancel the ride if the chance of precipitation is greater than 30%, the temperature is below 50 or there is ice/snow on the trails. If the weather looks doubtful it is particularly important to check the Ride Schedule on the PPTC website for a late cancelation notice. Alternatively, you may email the ride leader on Saturday to see if the ride is a go. Shirlington Library / Signature Theatre (SHR)
