2019-10-18 16:45:00 2019-10-18 16:45:00 America/New_York Scenic Social Germantown Rec Park Friday Night ride This is the Friday night scenic social ride.  The rides run from end of March and go as long as daylight and start times allow (Sep/Oct).  Start times will vary to accommodate the changes in sunset times and to try and start as late as possible but allowing enough time to complete the ride before dusk. Please check the calendar for the latest start times. Ride is about 26 miles and we typically aim to complete in 90 minutes. Ride length is ~26miles with several regrouping points along the way. We usually wait at these points for others to catch up.  The ride does not go if there is precipitation (snow or rain) or if the roads are very slick due to recent precipitation.  Check this listing on any given Friday to see if the ride has been canceled. The ride starts at the Adventure Playground at South Germantown Recreational Park.  One of the reasons for the ride start location is the heated bathrooms available year 'round.  In addition, we will be riding on low traffic roads in the Montgomery Ag Reserve. Some of these roads are rough (Sugarland for example) so please make sure you have a spare tube along just in case.   South Germantown Rec. Park - Adventure Playground (SGRAP)

2019-10-19 08:30:00 2019-10-19 08:30:00 America/New_York Tour of Fort Valley and Shenandoah Valley aka Edinburg Gap & Beyond Use your long-distance legs for one more ride before it gets too cold. This is one of the most varied and wonderful routes in Northern Virginia. From Front Royal we head west to Fort Valley, the valley within the Shenandoah Valley, where the north end isn't much wider than a two-lane road. The valley opens up as we reach the first rest stop at mile 20, the Fort Valley Store. We continue south until turning west for the 2-mile climb up Edinburg Gap (mile 30) and the longer descent into Edinburg. It's then west to Columbia Furnace, for rest stop 2 at mile 41. Now its north on the rolling hills of Back Road and after a few turns, rest stop 3 at mile 67 in Middletown. The final dozen miles or so are mostly down hill or flat back into Front Royal. I'll be leading from behind at a B pace. Ride start has restrooms. If 79 miles is too long for you, you're free to ride out-and-back into Fort Valley. Should rain be a threat I'll look to move the ride to Sunday. If you have questions, call or email, but don't wait until the morning of the ride.     Eastham Park (EAS)

2019-10-19 09:00:00 2019-10-19 09:00:00 America/New_York Rockville Wootton Ride In its 7th year, the Wootton ride is a regular fun group Saturday morning event, suitable for seasoned A/BB/B/CC riders. We will be mostly riding from Rockville to Germantown/Poolesville/Clarksburg with frequent variations to keep it interesting. Our typical ride length will range from 40 to 60 miles and will be moderately hilly (MH). Actual ride length and route for each week will be posted in advance. We make 1-3 rest stops depending on the length of the ride. The group generally divides into two 3 groups – (A/high BB – average 17-20 mph), (BB/B – average 16-17.5 mph), and (B/CC – average 13.5-15 mph). Our attempt will be to not drop anybody as long as you can ride with the respective groups average speed for the length of the ride. We are highly safety conscious, so you are expected to follow safe riding practices. Please consult the club website (www.potomacpedalers.org) or the ride Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/groups/rockvillewoottonride/) to confirm the start time and download the cue sheet. The ride will leave promptly at the designated time.   Please sign up on this link so ride leaders have access to rider's emergency information.   Come join us and enjoy the ride. Please bring your own cue sheet. Thomas S. Wootton High School (TWHS)

2019-10-20 09:30:00 2019-10-20 09:30:00 America/New_York Harvesting Corn Last weekend we did a ride out of the Stillpoint Brewery where we noticed that it was time to harvest the corn.  So what's more appropriate than doing the Harvesting Corn ride created by Jeff Boarman after the scouting trip that he & I did for this ride and the brewery rides. BTW, I heard some mumblings that there were not enough hills on the brewery ride so Jeff added all that I missed.  The long range weather forecast looks good.  There may be restrooms down stairs on Main St but not sure.  If you come into town on MD-27 just north of I-70 and turn left on Main St, you will see McDonalds and other places on your right.  I'll be leading the shorter ride at a CC pace and Karen will do the longer route at B pace.  E-bike Carol will be chasing the fast group (LOL!).  Although the routes have a lot of ups and downs, there are no steep climbs.
