Women's Rides Going Strong in Spite of the Rain!

by Robin Sparer, Women's Ride Coordinator

After a strong start of the summer cycling season, its seems that  the the rain has put a significant damper on riding. The Women's Group has persevered with their weekly rides with some few cancellations due to weather.
I was able to kick off a weekly Tuesday 6:00 PM 3-Trail Ride that connects the ICC, Rock Creek, and Mathew Henson Trails. Its a great way to beat the heat, get into the woods, and ride some paved trails. We meet every Tuesday through the end of September from the Georgia Ave. ICC Parking Lot. (top photo: First Tuesday 3 Trail Ride Club members Deborah Turton, Brenda Ruby, Martine Palmiter, and Jeanette Howard with Robin Sparer in front.)

Jessica Hirschhorn is leading a Tuesday 9:15 AM ride every other Tuesday out of District Hardware & Bike at the Wharf to Lake Artemisa.  It's very scenic and takes you on the Anacostia Riverfront Trail. (middle photo: Jessica Hischorn in the middle with other riders of her Tuesday morning ride.)

Brenda Ruby is leading a weekly Wednesday 6:30 PM ride out of the Trek Rockville Shop. These rides vary and intend to be inviting and encouraging to all levels - the pace is a nice and easy 10 mph. Faster women are welcomed to ride off the front. (bottom photo: Trek Rockville Women's Wednesday Ride stopping for a cool treat.)
Remember, we're always looking for others to create weekly or spur of the moment weekend, daily, or evening rides for women. Email me your ideas, monitor our PPTC Facebook and Website page for pop up WF/WO rides. Women only rides can also be found on our partner's WABA Women and Bicycle Facebook page.
Don't forget our Women Friendly (WF) regional rides/events coming. The PPTC Women's group will have riders at these events to mentor and meet those who are interested.

Our Club is nothing without volunteers! If YOU want to lead a WF or WO ride, or help out in any way, please get in touch with me! We are a club of thousands of members and it's likely a handful (or more) will want to do the ride you want to do - we just need to find each other. With so many members it can feel overwhelming - where do you start? Just reach out and get the ball (or wheel in this case!) rolling. You'll be glad you did and we'll be a better club for it.
